Austal’s Trade Apprenticeships

Austal Australia has a long-standing commitment to developing and retaining world-class tradespeople, which is reflected in our award-winning training record. Over 80 apprentices are currently learning and developing their trades from some of the world’s best shipbuilders at Austal Australia's Henderson shipyard.

Covering the key areas within the shipbuilding industry, Austal Apprenticeships provide you with an unequalled opportunity to gain a valuable trade qualification whilst building some of the world’s most advanced vessels.

In Australia, Austal takes on an average of 30 new apprentices and trainees each year in the following disciplines:

  • Aluminium Fabrication & Welding
  • Marine Fitout (Interiors & Carpentry)
  • Marine Fitting (Engineering)
  • First Class Machining (Engineering)
  • Electrical Mechanics (Electrician)

With uniforms, safety equipment, power tools and training provided at trade related Registered Training Organisations, these highly sought after apprenticeships are your opportunity to start a very rewarding career in a growing industry at a company with a long and successful history of excellence.

Work Experience

Austal provides Work Experience opportunities to West Australian Year 11, Year 12 and pre-apprenticeship students each year. This is a great opportunity for local students to gain hands on trade related experience in the following areas:

  • Aluminium and Steel Fabrication and Welding
  • Marine Fitout (Cabinet making and Interiors)
  • Electrical
  • Piping and Mechanical (Pipe Fitting, Plumbing, Mechanical Fitting, Machining, Air-Con Fitting, Hydraulics, Duct Installation and Machining)

Applications for work experience are welcome and are generally accepted at Austal Australia throughout the year. Work experience is available in a block release format for 1-3 weeks at a time within our Monday to Thursday working hours.
